RECYCLING, TRASH AND OTHER REMINDERS

The new trash company has so far been doing a wonderful job. Lets make there job a little easier as well. Please do not park in the street making it difficult for them to maneuver and pick up every ones trash.

All items for disposal must be in the trash can not set next to or leaned up against.

Please secure your recyclables so they do not end up blowing down the street on these windy days. You can bag your cans and bottles, preferably in a clear bag and set them on top of your newspaper's etc..

There was a recent vehicle break in on Sweet Alyssum. The vehicle was unlocked. Please remember to keep your car doors locked and remove all valuables. If you see suspicious activity please call the police.

Assessments were due on January 1st, 2012 and late if not posted by January 30th. Minimum amount due was $185.00 with the second half due April 1st. Remember if you chose this option there is $25 convinience fee added. Only those that paid in the full amount of$370.00 by January will not be assessed the fee.

NEW TRASH SCHEDULE!

The Town of Summerville has contracted with a new trash company. Waste Pro is the new provider.THE NEW TRASH PICK UP DAY AND RECYCLING DAY IS NOW FRIDAY. Waste Pro can be reached at 843-619- 0800, Please secure your recyclables so they do not blow out of the bin into the streets. You can bag cans and bottles and set them on top of the recycle bin for pick up.

Additionally, if Suburban Disposal did not pick up their trash tote please call them to arrange for them to pick it up. 873-4810

Yard debris pick up is still schedule on Monday.

PRE-PAY YOUR 2012 ASSESSMENTS NOW!

Did you know you can pre-pay your assessments for 2012. The Board of Directors are busy working on budgets right now and are doing there absolute best to keep assessments in the community at the same rate as 2011 or with as little increase as possible. The common concern heard when the assessment is due in January is: "This really stinks to pay right after the holiday." Unfortunately that's when it is due. You can avoid that cash shock or shortage whatever you prefer to call it by paying your assessment in advance. You can safely assume it will be the same as last year so paying that amount right now or over the next three months is better than getting hit with the entire amount January 1. You would only have to pay the difference, if any, on January 1 and if you overpay, a credit can be refunded or left on the account for next year. Its an option to consider before the holidays are upon you. Now that all the county schools are back in session, please be cautious while driving through the community....Simple reminders:

Here are some simple reminders for drivers:
Slow down and be especially alert in the residential neighborhoods and school zones
Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs
Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully
Watch for children on and near the road in the morning and after school hours
Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Put down your phone and don’t talk or text while driving

Reminder for your kids:
They should cross the street with an adult until they are at least 10 years old
Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks
Never run out into the streets or cross in between parked cars
Make sure they always walk in front of the bus where the driver can see them
PLEASE, add to the list a reminder to not leave trash behind at the bus stops.

Newsworthy items this week:

The Community picnic was Saturday June 25th. A good time was had by all. Over 150 hot dogs and 60 hamburgers were consumed as well as the many wonderful side dishes and desserts brought by everyone. The weather was hot and the flys were thick but it was a great opportunity for neighbors to interact and get to know each other and their families. A big thank you to the Mr. & Mrs. Erb, Fran Kuertz, Mr. & Mrs Merfeld for all there help and donations, to Dan Hasting for allowing us to use his competition bar-b-que grill to cook up the burgers and dogs and to Gerry Mason, who bared the heat not only from mother nature but by cooking for 4 hours. It was great to see everyone there and hope to do this again in the fall!

Don't forget to come join the patriotic parade to be held Monday, July 4th starting at 10:45 am. Parade will leave the pool area at 11:00 am, take a right up Southernwood Drive, Right on Sweet Alyssum and circle back around to the pool. $25 gift card for the most patriotic decorated bike, scooter, stroller, power wheel, pet or person. Ice Cream Social to follow.

Thank you to all those residents who attended the Annual meeting at the pool on April 30th. It was good to see some new faces. Many good ideas were exchanged and new volunteers are geared up. Richard Erb has volunteered to build a sign Board for the entrance and Mike Chisolm will head up the 1st Annual picnic scheduled for June 25th at the pool. POOL OPENS MAY 1st

The pool will be open May 1st. Only residents who are current with their assessments are able to use the pool. Key fobs will be deactivated for those in arrears so please do not open the gate for anyone without a key or who's key does not work, they need to contact the office. Please remember only kids 14 and older may use the pool unsupervised. Additionally they are not permitted to bring younger siblings with them.

If residents see anyone accessing the pool improperly by jumping the fence, kicking the gate or tail gating someone in they should ask these people to leave the area. If you are uncomfortable doing this you can also call the Summerville police department who will come out and issue trespassing notices to these individuals. Likewise anyone intoxicated can be removed in this same manner.

NO GLASS IS PERMITTED IN THE POOL AREA AND WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE SUSPENSION OF YOUR POOL PRIVILEGES.

SPRING CLEANING TIME

We all welcome the spring weather but before its warm enough to green up the grass the lovely weeds spring up in lawns. The violation inspector will be ramping up the lawn care notices as well as power washing on the exterior of the homes. Take measures to remove weeds from your lawn and clean out dead plant material in your landscape beds, freshen your mulch and pick up those dead leaves.

Inspect the exterior of your home for that pesky green and black algae so prevalent here in the humid south. Unfortunately with power washing you may even have to clean it again in the fall.

Avoid that violation notice and get a head start on those outdoor chores.

STATEMENTS GOING OUT FOR 2nd PAYMENT OF ASSESSMENTS

We would like to comend the middle school students on their stellar behavior at the bus stop since it has was moved up near the amenity center. We do caution parents to speak to their kids about staying away from the pond across the street from the bus stop while waiting to be picked up.

Assessments were due January first and payments had to be posted to your account by January 30th to avoid late fees being assessed. If you opted for the multi payment convenience plan you will receive an invoice in March for the second half of the assessment. The convenience fee will be added to this invoice. Payment is due April 1st and must be posted to your account by April 30th to avoid late fees.

Recycling changes this Friday February 4th. All items can be placed curbside for pick up rather than it being co-mingle one week and paper the next. Please be sure to secure your recyclables to avoid them blowing out of your containers down the street onto other peoples property, in the storm sewers and in the common area.

The annual meeting will be held the end of March this year, information will be in the mail the end of this month.

HOLIDAY DECORATIONS

Please be reminded all holiday decorations and lights should be removed from the exterior of the home. The general rule is decorations must be removed within 30 days after the holiday has passed. The Covenants enforcement department with Community Management Group will be touring the communities and notices will be sent.

WINDBLOWN TRASH

Please be sure to secure your trash in your cans on when placed outside to be sure the wild wintry winds don't blow it all over the community. This trash ends up in the ponds, other peoples lawns, in the common area and in the storm drains which is detrimental to all of these areas.

RECYCLING SCHEDULE TO CHANGE

Good news to all from Suburban Disposal. Starting February 1st, Suburban will be picking up both co-mingled and paper items EVERY Friday. No more trying to remember what goes out this week! They also will eliminate not coming on the 5th Friday of the month as well so recycling will be 52 pick ups per year (unless its a holiday, then they come the next day). There is no additional expense for this either. If you have any question please contact Suburban directly at (843) 873-4810.

Additionally, please remember to secure your recyclables as well as your trash to prevent them from blowing down the street. Trash ends up in the storm drains, which in turn ends up in the ponds.

GUESTS AND STREET PARKING

2011 ASSESSMENT STATEMENTS MAILED

Residents will be receiving their 2011 assessment statements in the mail over the next few days. The annual assessment this year is $370.00. Payment is due January 1st, 2011.

Owners have the option of either paying the $370.00 in full by January 1st or the option of making two payments with an additional $25 convenience fee added to the second payment. If you choose the payment option the first payment of $185.00 is due on January 1st, 2011 and the second payment of $210.00 will be due on April 1st.

Payments must be posted to your account by January 30th to avoid assessment of late fees.

Please do not mail payments to the management office at 349 Folly Road. Payments received in the office can take an additional five days to process which could result in late fees being assessed.

ALSTON MIDDLE SCHOOL BUS STOPS MOVED!

The Alston Middle School bus stops in the community have been moved to the pool area. This action was taken by the School Transportation Department due to the misbehavior of students at the bus stops. Neighbors were upset with the behavior of several students, trash left behind and total disrespect of their property. Students will now be picked up at the bottom entrance to the amenity center parking lot. Students are not to wait up under the pavilion or on the playground. Any student caught disrespecting this area will be suspended from the bus and a parents will be responsible for getting them to school. This is unfortunate for those student who respect other peoples property but have to walk the extra distance to the parking lot for pick up. PLEASE SPEAK TO YOUR TEEN AND ASSIST WITH THIS ISSUE. Damages to amenity center will cost everyone in the community. Anyone interested in supervising the students in the morning, feel free, students are generally at the bus stop by 7:40 and the bus comes between 7:45 and 7:55 am.

FALL NEWS

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL THE SPOOKSTERS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. On Halloween several homes did spooky set ups that the neighborhood kids had to venture into for their treats. All were very creative and created the perfect Halloween ambiance. Kids throughout the neighborhood raved to each other about which one was the scariest and many made repeat visits to them. Thank you as well to all who passed out candy to the little (and big) ghosts and goblins. We cant wait for next year to see what scares everyone comes up with.

LANDSCAPE UPDATE

The Board of Directors recently re-bid the landscape contract and have hired Horizon landscaping to replace Yard Guys landscaping. Their first visit to the community was very impressive with many areas being cleaned up that had been neglected. New pine straw was installed as well and the neighborhood is looking good. We are in the no grow season so spring will be the true test.

TRASH CAN STORAGE

Please be reminded trash cans cannot be stored were they are visible. If you live on a corner lot and do not have a privacy fence they cannot be stored in the back yard as they are an eyesore to the neighbor behind you. Please remember to secure your trash can lids to prevent windblown trash in the nieghborhood. This trash ends up in the sewer system, in the ponds and on the common area.

TIPS FOR TRICK-OR-TREATERS
Carry a flashlight with you for visibility.Always stay in a group with an adult!
Never enter a stranger’s house or car for a treat!Always walk on the sidewalk.
If there is no sidewalk, walk on the grass away fromthe street.
Look both ways before crossing the street and if you are wearing a mask take it off.Wait until an adult can check your candy before you eat any of it.
Only accept treats from neighbors or friends you know!

TIPS FOR PARENTS
Plan costumes that are bright and reflective! Consider adding more reflective tape tocostumes + trick or treat bags.
Always carry flashlights.
Masks can limit or block eyesight, consider makeup or cut the mask eyeholes biggerso they can see.
Remind children to remove their masks to cross the street!We recommend that children do not use props like guns, knives, or swords.However, if they are used, make sure they don’t look real!Clear hazards from your property.
Remove obstacles such as flower pots and garden hoses, so children won’t trip on them rushing from house to house.Remind your children not to eat the candy until an adult has checked their treats!
Your child’s school may be having a Halloween party. Call the School and ask.Please explain to children the difference between tricks and vandalism.

FALL MAINTENANCE

Fall is here and the lawns are starting to turn towards winter hibernation. Although lawns wont need to be mowed anymore there are still other maintenance requirements around your home that will need your attention. Here are a few items you need to be on top of to avoid those sometimes necessary violation notices.

Mulch and especially pine straw may need a fall application to freshen it up.
Flowering annuals will need to be removed from plant beds after the first cold snap
Leaves will need to be raked from lawns
Winter weeds will need to be kept at bay
Power washing may need to be done on the exterior of the home
Fences may need to be power washed as well

Additionally, with cold weather approaching homeowners should also look at the exterior of their homes for any nooks, cracks or holes where critters and bugs will be seeking to find warmth to spend the winter. spray foam around cable, a/c lines, electric lines and pipes where they enter the home to prevent these pesky creatures from setting up camp in your home.

POOL CLOSED OCTOBER 4th

Summer has gone and fall has come. Cool evenings, leaves falling and now its time to put the pool to bed for the winter. The last day to use the pool is October 3rd. Furniture will be stored and the gate locked on October 4th. Thank you to all those patrons who respected the pool and followed all the rules this summer. Look for new registration forms spring 2011. Residents will have to complete one to use the pool next summer.

Parents, we ask you do not allow your teenagers to hang out at the playground. It was published in the last newsletter how disrespectful they are of this are besides the fact the activities they carry on up there out of your sight. Smoking, pot smoking, drinking, graffiti, and to put it blatantly, they are having sex. Teens will be asked to leave this area and if they refuse, parents will be contacted or even the police department called. If they could and would respect this area it wouldn't be a problem, unfortunately due to the acts of few, all will be restricted from the area.
Please do not park on the streets. Temporary parking of guest vehicles are permitted but continual parking by homeowners is not allowed. We ask if you are having a large gathering at your house please use the pool parking lot for overflow.
No loud music at the pool. Thank you.
Please remeber to store your trash can in a location not visiable from the street.

We here at Community Management Group have been proactively working out hurricane planning and what would need to be done to amenities on the properties if a hurricane did end up hitting our area. The Board of Directors for our communities have been provided a list of duties we are to be responsible for. If we are evacuated we have plans worked out with our entire staff to be back in the area as soon as possible. Our contracted vendors have been contacted and retained to help with storm clean up with our properties being priority. As homeowners we ask you also take a few precautions that are common sense to all of us. The last few months we have posted hurricane preparedness tips but when the time comes those fly right out of our heads. PLEASE BE PREPARED and revisit our blog history, our website and the local county information for pertinent information to protect yourself and your property if a storm does hit our area.

SLOW DOWN - SCHOOL IS BACK IN SESSION

School is back in session which finds students out on the corners now waiting for the bus or being dropped off. The high school students are out there as early as 5:30 am. Please slow down and be wary of students. The difference to your destination traveling at the speed of 30 miles an hour compared to 20 or 25 is only 7 seconds. Is that 7 seconds really worth the life of someone in the community.

POOL GATE REPAIRED

The pool gate has been repaired and its business as usual for swimming. The Assoication will be looking into a higher grade steel gate for next years pool season. Additional cameras will also be budgeted for do to suspicious activity in the parking lot. Additional lighting is also being considered. The pool season will be extended until October 4th to make up for the three days the pool was closed.

A big thank you to those neighbors who stepped up and volunteered to monitor the pool during the repair period.

POOL GATE BROKEN

Due to residents and teenagers who do not have keys to the pool or are not monitoring their younger kids, the pool gate has been broken and will need to be repaired. Please do not let your young kids stand and swing on the gate. If you see someone entering the pool by kicking the bottom of the gate please call the Summerville police department if you are not comfortable approaching them. Thank you for your assistance.

NEWS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Thanks to everyone who came out for the 4th of July bike parade this year. Everyone enjoyed the parade of decorated bikes, scooters and strollers and of course the delicious ice cream that followed. Thank you to the Grand Marshall Kim Wagner for leading the parade.

Several teenagers were caught in the neighborhood stealing bicycles from yards. one individual was arrested and three were given trespass notices by Summerville Police department. Be safe and remind your kids to put their bikes away or in the rear yard where they cannot be seen. Keep garage doors closed when you are not in there.

COMMUNITY WIDE EVENT JULY 3RD BIKE PARADE

Please plan to participate in the 3rd Annual 4th of July parade. The parade will be held July 3rd at the amenity center. Please decorate your bikes, scooters, strollers, wagons and yourself and meet at the pool at 10:45 am. The parade will leave from the pool at 11:00 am. Parade route is up Southernwood Drive to Sweet Alyssum back down to Southernwood ending at the pool. Ice Cream social to follow the parade. Bring out the kids and have fun. If you don't want to participate in the parade come on out and cheer them on.

This event is open to everyone in Summerpark including the Forest at Summerpark. Events are generally call Summerpark and many people in the Forest do not think they can attend. This is untrue. The community as a whole is called Summerpark.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS TIPS

Four simple steps can help YOU get ready:
1. Get a kit of emergency supplies.
2. Make a plan of what you will do.
3. Be informed about what might happen.
4. Get involved in preparing your community.
Emergency preparedness is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone should have an emergency plan and be prepared to take care of themselves for at least the first 72 hours after a disaster.

When preparing for a possible emergency situation, think first about the basics of survival: fresh water, food, clean air and warmth. Consider two kits. In one, put everything you will need to stay where you are and make it on your own for at least the first 72 hours after a disaster. The other kit should be a light-weight, smaller version that you can have ready to take with you in case you need to leave home.

Recommended Items to Include in a Basic Emergency Supply Kit:
¨ Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation.
¨ Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.
¨ Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both.
¨ Flashlight and extra batteries.

POOL AND PLAYGROUND VIOLATIONS

The pool opened on May 1st and already there are people who are disregarding the posted rules and the rules adopted by Summerpark which are attached. School closes Friday and things are going to get a lot worse unless parents bring their kids under control.

Teenagers 14 years old are allowed to go to the pool without an adult but they ARE NOT allowed to bring guests with them unless they have an adult from household present who is over 18 years old. They are not to allow kids from other neighborhoods to use the pool unless as stated they are with an adult. Recently there was a group of about 16 teens who found it quite amusing to take the soap from the dispensers in the bathrooms and smear it on the floors. Another child was injured when she slipped in this mess. This type of behavior will not be tolerated and these teens will be banned from the pool.

Additionally, the playground is for children ages 2-12. Teenagers are using this as their hang out. They have no respect for this area. They have left foul graffiti all over on several occasions, leave their trash, not to mention cigarette butts and most disgusting of all condoms. They will be told to leave the area, if told more than once they will be invited to attend a hearing with the Board of Directors.

Another big issue is foul language from teens and adults alike. PLEASE remember this is a family pool and many people do not appreciate the gutter language which is not necessary. Speak like that in your own home not at the pool.

There will be a Town Hall meeting on June 12th, 6pm at the pool. Please attend and bring your teens with you so they can understand the consequences of their actions from this point on out.

TUNE UP YOUR A/C FOR SUMMER HEAT

Spring to Summer A/C changeovers are coming as things heat up. Remember that all air conditioners have one or two drip pipes which usually go to the outside of your home. A “wet-vac” applied to these pipes is a good idea to draw out accumulated algae growth. Most units have a cap on the pipe near the “P-trap” at the indoor unit. The cap can be opened and a bit of bleach or a chlorine tablet can be added to prevent clogging.

The pool will open Saturday May 1. Assessments must be current in order to use the pool. Those in arrears and caught using the pool can and will be charged with trespassing. Children under 14 must be with a parent. There is going to be a ZERO tolerance for glass containers in the pool area. You will receive one warning, if caught a second time your pool privileges will be suspended for the season. Please utilize the trash cans and pick up trash after your children. Smoker stations will also be placed around the pool area, please utilize these or smoking will be banned in the pool area. anyone caught in the pool area after hours will also have their privileges revoked. No one wants to spoil anyones fun but the pool rules and DHEC regulations are in place so everyone can have a safe and fun swim season.

SPRING WEEDS AND EXTERIOR MAINTENANCE

With the recent rain and now warm weather many yards are springing up with weeds.Please take measures to remove these from the lawn before they spread into an uncontrollable situation. The sod put down in the yards is Centipede. Lowe's,Home Depot and garden centers can advise you on the best product to use to stop the spread. Your lawn will appreciate it, your neighbors who don't want the weeds spread to their yard and the Association as well.

It may also be time to clean the exterior of your home, generally here in the South with the high humidity homes exterior need to be cleaned 2x per year to inhibit the growth of algae and mildew on the siding.

LOW COUNTRY FOOD BANK

The National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive happens every year on Mother’s Day weekend. All of the food that is collected, last year it was 100,000 pounds, comes to the Lowcountry Food Bank and Amy Kosar is in charge of the coordination of the efforts. She is trying to make sure that there is as much awareness as possible. It’s so easy, all people have to do is leave a bag of food at, in or by their mailbox and the letter carrier picks it up and brings it back to the local post office. POOL SEASON RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER

With the recent snow and cold weather, its hard to believe the pool will open in two short months. Please be reminded your assessments must be current in order to use the pool. Delinquent accounts will be deactivated and you will have to contact the office to have your pool fob reactivated. If you ave lost your pool fob a replacement can be issued but there is a $25.00 fee. Much to the delight of every child in the Summerpark neighborhood and some adults as well, February 12th and 13th we received significant snow in the area. Many neighbors were out and about marveling or grumbling about the snow. It brought a beauty to the neighborhood with its iciness. So when the sweltering days of summer are upon us and we are all melting in the heat stop back by and visit this blog for pictures of this winter when we saw snow in the south.

ANNUAL MEETING FEBRUARY 4th

The meeting will be held at Spann Elementary School at 6:30 p.m. Please return your proxy to the Community Management Group office so a quorum can be established. 2010 ASSESSMENT PAYMENT INFORMATION

Happy New Year to all! Best wishes to you and yours in the new year ahead.

In order for the HOA to successfully operate it counts on homeowners making their annual assessment payment to fund the various projects, keep the lights on, pay the contractors and sock a little away for a rainy day. 2010 assessment statements were mailed out in December, if you did not receive your statement please contact our office and we would be glad to provide you with a new one. The assessment payment was due the 1st of January and late fees will be applied if payment is not posted by the 30th of this month. There are various ways in which you can pay your assessment:

1) Detach the stub from the bottom of your statement form and mail your payment to the bank’s lockbox at Post Office Box 912, Columbia, SC 29202. Please make checks and money orders payable to "Summerpark HOA"

2) Go online to http://www.cmgcharleston.com/ and select “online payments.” You will need your account number noted on your statement for this option if you have not already setup your account.

DON'T LET THE COLD WEATHER FREEZE YOUR WALLET.....WINTER WEATHER TIPS

Secure your outside faucets by disconnecting all hoses from outside faucets and make sure they are drained and turned off. If you don't have a separate shut-off valve for outside faucets, protect them with insulated covers. These can be purchased from your local hardware store. You can also place caulk around the pipes where they enter your home.
If your hot water heater is in an unheated area or near drafts from outdoors, insulate it.
Before traveling out of town, turn off your water at the main valve or at the meter. You can turn off your hot water heater at the electric breaker panel.
If the temperature will be below freezing, open one or two faucets in the house to allow water sitting in the pipes to expand.
If you have an irrigation system, be sure to wrap and insulate your back flow device to prevent freezing.

HOLIDAY DECORATION REMINDERS

The holidays are here, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Ramadan..... With the holidays come the urge for owners to decorate and be festive. The Association does not prohibit holiday displays but would like to remind everyone lights and decorations need to be removed in a timely manner. The general rule to follow is holiday decorations can be placed out 30 days prior to the holiday and must be removed no later than 30 days after the holiday. We hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season.

Time to change those clocks back this weekend. FALL BACK, SPRING AHEAD as the old saying goes, so remember to turn your clocks back one hour before you go to bed on Saturday night. Also this is a good time to replace smoke detector batteries etc.

Additionally, Please be careful this Saturday as all the little ghosts and goblins will be out and about. If you plan to give out treats, put on your porch light so parents and kids know your home and participating in the old Trick or Treat Halloween tradition. Be extra cautious driving in the neighborhood and anywhere else you may travel. Children may dart out in front of you in their excitement.

COVENANT ENFORCEMENT AND MONETARY FINES

Owners in the neighborhood have received from time to time a notification of a covenant violation on the property. Most residents take the necessary steps to bring the property into compliance., but there are those who do not comply and are eventually fined. A common misconception is the fines assessed against a property are collected by Community Management Group as a profit to the company. This is not the case. All violation fines assessed and collected are deposited directly into the Associations operating account. It is not the goal of the Association to collect these fines, more often then naught the fines are waived once the property has been brought into compliance and the resident has contacted the office. Covenant enforcement is not a pleasurable job by the Board or the management company but a necessary one to keep the neighborhood looking its best.

POOL SEASON COMING TO AN END

September is here, the kids are back in school and soon the pool will be closed for the winter months. The season officially ends on September 30th and at that time the pool furniture will be stored. Technically the pool water is still safe for swimming even after the 30th but the contractor will only be servicing the pool once a week whereas right now it is handled seven days a week. The Board would prefer you do not swim after the 30th but if you feel you must please let us know so the neighbors who keep on eye on things don't run you off. Its swim at your own risk. Thank you to everyone for making the 2009 pool season a safe and enjoyable one.

HURRICANE PREPARDNESS

Historically in the Charleston area, September has been the month for most Hurricanes to affect the area. Hurricane season lasts through November so we havent made it through the season yet but lets hope we do without incident. In the event of a hurricane, here are some helpful tips to help you weather the storm.

YOUR OUR HURRICANE PLAN:

Have a practice drill to determine what everyone’s responsibility will be.

Educate all family members in CPR and other first aid measures.

Teach children how to use a fire extinguisher and when & how to call 911 for emergency assistance.

Check all fire alarms, smoke alarms, etc. for proper operation.

Determine what the criteria will be as to whether you evacuate or stay in your home.

Know your evacuation routes and determine which route you will use should an evacuation order be issued.

Determine in advance your evacuation destination. If you will not be staying with a friend or family member, make hotel reservations at this location as soon as a “watch” is issued. Remember, that during an evacuation severaltowns may be evacuated at the same time and hotels will fill up quickly in all surrounding areas. Reservations can be cancelled.

Make a decision about vehicles. If you have more than one vehicle and will not be taking all of them with you determine where the other vehicles will beleft during the storm.

Make a decision about boats and other recreational vehicles.

If you have pets, determine whether they will evacuate with you or be placed in a shelter.

Have a list of phone numbers, such as family members, doctors, employers, insurance company’s, etc.

Make arrangements for extra cash on hand.

Catalog all personal items NOW. Include description (brand name, model number, age, purchase price, place of purchase, etc.) Take a picture of everything and make two copies of the pictures and lists. Keep one copy withyou and send the other to a relative or friend out of town. Never give the insurance company the only copy.

Have a secure place for all valuables & documents that you will need to take with you, such as birth certificates, property deeds, insurance policies, etc.

Determine an out-of-town person who can be a “point of contact” to communicate messages if communications are down for an extended period oftime.

Prepare and maintain a “Hurricane Kit” (a list of recommended supplies isincluded). It is recommended that you have approximately 7 gallons of water for each person and food supplies for a minimum of 2 weeks.

Check all flashlights, battery operated radios & TVs, and other supplies in your“Hurricane Kit” for proper operation.

Evaluate your home to determine if you can make improvements that will provide better protection. If you have an older home, getting a professional opinion about updated building codes, etc. may be helpful in determining beneficial improvements. You should also review your insurance policy, with your agent, to determine if you need to make any coverage changes. Be sure to ask questions about coverage for updated building codes, demolition coverage for an undamagedportion of your home, flood coverage, understand your coverage and deductibles, clarify any exclusions, verify that in the event of a complete loss you will have the coverage you need to re-build, ask what you will need toprove a claim, find out what their procedures are relative to immediate protection of the home following a loss, ask who to contact immediately following the storm and get phone numbers, how long you may expect towait for an adjuster, how contact will be made in the event that all communications are lost for a period of time, and any other questions that you can think of. Preparing now will make the claims process much easier andless stressful for everyone.

Obtain and prepare plywood, plastic, shutters or other protective provision for windows & doors. Install and inspect the covering in advance of an emergency to insure proper fit.

SCHOOL IS BACK IN SESSION- PLEASE SLOW DOWN.

It is that time of the year again, school is back in session. Please be cautious when driving through the neighborhood, the neighborhood children will be out walking to catch their buses and walking back home in the afternoon. Please slow down.We hope all had a great summer with family, friends, vacations, time off, and enjoying the pool this summer. Please pass along to your visitors driving in the neighborhood to please slow down and keep our children safe. The high school kids catch the bus at 5:45 am, often times they are not fully awake nor are you driving to work. PLEASE SLOW DOWN AND BE CAUTIOUS.

Additionally if your home has a sidewalk in front, please do not block the sidewalk with your vehicles. This is not only dangerous to the kids, joggers, walkers etc.. in the neighborhood but against the law and residents can be ticketed.

Please speak to your kids about courtesy while waiting for the bus. Bus stops are adjacent to homeowners property. Last year we received numerous complaints about the kids throwing trash on the lawns, parents pulling up on lawns while they wait to collect their children, noise and foul language. If they dont act like that at home they shouldnt act like that in public.

SUMMERTIME LAWN MAINTENANCE

Summers half over all ready and soon the kids will be going back to school. We know owners are busy with summer fun and vacations but please remember to make arrangements for your lawns to be maintained in your absence.

Yard Maintenance standards are as follows.

Mow your lawn regularly.

Edge your driveways and sidewalks.

Trim tall weeds from around the house and pull weeds from landscape beds.

Please do not blow your grass clippings into the street. You must sweep them up after you mow.

If you use mulch or pine straw in your landscape beds it must be freshened on a regular basis. Pine straw tends to turn gray half way throught the season and generally needs to be applied twice a year.

Dress up your bikes, wagons, strollers and scooters or yourself in the most patriotic fashion you can find or dream up and meet us in the pool parking lot at 10:45 am. The parade will leave from the pool parking lot at 11:00 am and proceed up Southernwood Drive , turn right on Sweet Alyssum and circle around back to the pool. If you don't want to be in the parade then come and watch the gala event and join us at the pool afterward for Rita’s Ice. So come on out and help celebrate Independence Day!!

The pool opened May 1st. Parents please keep a good eye on your children. Accidents can happen and with the recent drowning at the Bridges of Summerville we ask all parents to monitor their children carefully. Please remind your teenagers there is to be no rough housing. Those disobeying the rules will be ejected.

We have already had two incidents of Trespassing by two Caucasian males and two African American Males. The non-emergency police were called and the teens were escorted from the property and issued trespassing citations. This is our pool and ours to monitor, if you suspect someone is not a resident of Summerpark or see them entering the pool without their pool fob you can call the non-emergency police. Non-emergency (843) 873-3571. Please speak to your kids about allowing friends use the pool without them in attendance. This is not allowed.

The pool is closed on Thursdays for maintenance. No swimming please.

"Yard of the Month" will be starting again in May. Spruce up those lawns and flowerbeds and maybe you will be the lucky winner of a $50 gift card from Lowes.

The pool will be opened May 1st. If you did not register for a pool fob please contact the Community management office to obtain one. If you received a fob last year and find it doesnt work contact property manager. Please be reminded owners must be current with their assessments to use the pool.

Recently signs were posted on the ponds stating "No Fishing", "No Swimming" and "No Boating". These signs were posted at the request of the insurance carrier for Summerpark. Several residents who regularly fish in the ponds as well as their children were concerned as the ponds are for the enjoyment of the community. The signs release the community from any liability that may arise if someone were to drown in one of the ponds. Swimming and Boating will be enforced but fishing is not stated as a violation in the covenants and will not be enforced unless it is someone trespassing upon the property. All fishing is "Catch and Release ONLY"

Volunteers are needed to head up a social committee. Last year the community had two successful events at the pool, a 4th of July bike parade and ice cream social and a Fall pizza party.
